Our Last Days

October 6, 2013

Trying to go back through the memories of our last few days at Tower Fall In YNP will be a bit challenging and I hope  I do not forget any important memories.  If so, I will amend the blog entry with notation.

A lot of our group left on September 8th.  I must say it was a sad day for most of us.  When you work closely and literally live with a group of people for 3 months, you become a small family.  As adults, we all knew each other pretty good within a short amount of time.  We knew the highs and lows of each personality - and they knew us.  We had a great group to work with.  The Manager over all of Tower Fall and the Floor Managers all remarked that they had never worked with a more cooperative group of people.  There was so much respect and appreciation for each individual that it was difficult to not have a good time.  The time flew for us.  Before we knew it 4 months had passed and we were saying goodbye and packing our car.  There were tears shed and promises made to keep in touch.  So many pictures were made.  My desire is to make a separate entry for just our new friends.

To catch up on our EDR - it got a little better.  Bud still had a difficult time with some of the menu.    He lost about 15 pounds over the summer.  (We've been home about a week and he is slowly gaining it back. - Home cooking).  We continued to enjoy our dorm room - it was very roomy and comfortable, even though our last night there we had no heat.  A little cold but not too bad.

The weather began to take a turn toward Winter and we had a blizzard, literally about 10 miles from us on the mountain and on south into the Canyon area.  Some of  the roads were closed on Wednesday before we left the next day.  Canyon received about 3-4 inches.  We took some pictures of the mountain area as we left.  It was pretty.

Our last day to work was September 19.  We all got there early so we could get some things started and be ready for when the Retail Clean-up crew came in.  I guess between all of us employees (10-12) and the crew (another 10-12) we were able to do inventory before lunch.  The crew remained to pack some things to take to other stores that were not closing until a later date.

Our car took a beating while we were there.  Bud had washed, compounded and put two coats of wax on it before we left.  We did not wash it once while we were there. Washing was useless because of the road construction and all the dust that was ever present. It was a mess - more on the outside than on the inside.  The road to our dorm was full of potholes that only got worse while we were there.  Our first stop when we left YNP was in Rexburg, ID to have the car serviced at the Toyota dealership.  Front and rear ends were both out of alignment, tires needed rotating, oil change and lube and all filters needed to be changed.  We then headed on to Idaho Falls for a part that was needed.

We spent two days with Bud's niece Judy, outside of Logan, Utah.  We had a great time.  Rest, relaxation, family fellowship, good food and some fun time fishing.  We actually caught some with help from Butch (Judy's husband).  He took us to a private sportsman club and we had so much fun fishing, enjoying the views and weather and our picnic lunch.

It is early to say if we will go back next year.  We are a little tired and home feels really good.  We loved Tower Fall and can't think of working anywhere else, but we'll need to pray about it and see how our health is in 4 or 5 months before we recommit.

All in all it was a good summer.  We hated that Jill had to have her gallbladder removed while we were there and hated that Bud's sister was ill most of the time we were there.  Even though the communications were not very good, we managed to keep informed.

Posting a few pictures of the last few days we were there and also our travels.

There really is a moose there.  You can see his light brown antlers.

Didn't get to see it fall, but the snow was beautiful.

More snow fall.  Looks like powdered sugar had been sifted over the trees.

Pretty grazing land in the game range that Butch & Judy took us to.

Lost Lake Hike

September 5, 2013

It's been a few days since Greg went home and I think he misses the park almost as much as we will when we go home.  We had a wonderful visit with him and he and I spent a few hours together hiking some of the back trails together.

Lost Lake is an area not to far from Tower.  As a matter of fact, you can hike in at the Petrified tree 1 mile east of Roosevelt and hike 4.5 miles going back west to the back of Roosevelt Lodge.  We went one way in and hiked back the same way (roundtrip was 1+ miles.  Following are some of the pictures we took.

Two full weeks of work, family and fun!!

September 2, 2013

It has been way too long since blogging our last entry and it is difficult to believe that we have less than 3 weeks left to work in the park.  The last 11 days have been busy, busy, busy.  We worked 6 straight days and then Greg came for his visit and now we work 4 straight days.  We surprise ourselves - fortunately our work days are 6 1/2 hours and are do-able.  And the visit with Greg was a shot in the arm for us - it was the push to get us over a spell of homesickness we were beginning to feel.  With just 17 more days to be here - well, we can do it!!

We had our Christmas Party on August 24th.  It was really nice - more food was available than you could imagine.  I think everyone contributed something - if not food then their services to help decorate or help clean up.  Bud and I made Maple Nut Fudge.  It was a great evening.  We had a "spiritual side" of the party with the Christmas story being read and I sang Away in a Manger.  The  entire group sang some carols.  The we went to a secular time and had lots of fun with songs, readings and a special "honors" presentation.  Bud and one other man received the Ernie Harwell award for sharing so much baseball trivia - very cute!!  Other awards were given for little "personality" quirks.  It was lots of fun.

Greg flew in to Bozeman, MT on August 27th for business and then drove over to Gardner where we met him for dinner.  He spent 3 days with us and it was so much fun.  Every day was packed with sightseeing and picnics.  Greg and I took a few hikes (half way to Cascade Lake and all the way to Lost Lake near the Petrified tree.  I am posting pictures.  We all got up early one morning to go Moose watching - but the Moose didn't show up.  We were disappointed that Greg didn't see them but he did get to see our neighborhood black bear on thee separate occasions.  We saw the sun set one evening from atop Mt. Washburn (on Chittenden Road) and a sunset out in the Lamar Valley one evening. From the top of Mt. Washburn one can see one of the most spectacular sights seen in America. Mountains can be seen over 100 miles away.

Labor Day weekend has been busy - but today will probably mark a real decrease in activity.  Tomorrow the road work starts again and they will work feverishly to try to meet their deadline of October 17th.  The Roosevelt Store closed there store last night until next spring.  Those worker/friends are leaving today to head home.  Our crew narrows down week by week now.  We have 8 people leaving  a week from today and that will leave just a few of us.  Our EDR has been hot hard this year and we are not for sure who will be preparing the meals for us the last 10 days we are here.  I'll keep that posted.

It was been very warm in the park this year with little rain fall in the past 5 weeks.  Today it is cloudy and it is our understanding that we are to have rain and a cold front come through.  Hope it snows a little before we leave - the Taiwanese girls are so excited for it to snow.
